Going solo has been a long time in the coming but I believe it was an inevitability. The
first band I was associated with was Dey Tephe back in San Francisco around 1987. This was, of
course, the band I'd joined right after high school. I played keys for them and we did a few
house parties and such and had a lot of big dreams about being the coolest band ever. This is
as all first bands believe I suppose. We never did any serious recordings and we split up a
year and a half later.
I then moved to Seattle in the summer of 1989 and met Daniel Blackmoor and joined his goth band called, Prayers for the Raven. Again playing keys, we recorded a cassette album and two CD albums. The cassette album called, "A Cold Refrain", would be very inspiring for me in the coming years. Two of the songs found on that tape, I would later re-record under the band name, Shadow Light (the songs being, "Sanity", and "Memories of Dying"). Later, Barry Semple on drums, and Brian "pFrenz-c" Castillo on guitar, would join the band. Both of them would become great friends of mine and continue on with me in both Shadow Light and now with Johnny Forlorn as well. It was in 1992 that I also joined the band, Faith & Disease. I actually met Eric Cooley and Dara Rossenwasser while playing a show together with Prayers in Seattle. They had just formed the band and were all ready losing their first keyboardist. They asked me to come and 'try it out' and it seemed to work well. Now in 2003, and 11 years later, I can be found on many of the albums ("Beauty and Bitterness", "Insularia", "Lamentations", "Beneath the Trees", and "Passport to Kunming"). F&D have been described in so many ways over the years: goth, etherial, folk, shoe-gazer, etc..., and to be honest I myself don't really know how to classify us. Please check the Faith & Disease website at http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/157/faith__disease.html for more information. As Prayers for the Raven was finally splitting up in 1993, I decided that I wanted to continue to write my own material as well as play for F&D. So I convinced Brian Castillo, and Greg Forschler, as well as Barry Semple to come and join a new band I was putting together called Shadow Light. This was to be a large theatrical band playing goth-rock. We had dance performers and a full line up (vox, keys, guitar, bass, drums). The first recording we did was for a Joy Division compilation that Mere Mortal Records was putting out. This was in 1995. Soon after though (1996), we were in the studio to record our first full length album to be distributed through Ivy Records called, "Within the Shadow Light". We followed that up in 1999 with our second full length album, "Hello, Darkness". Many line up changes occured before and after that album. Today, we are still a 5 piece but Brian, Greg and Barry are no longer involved in the band. For more information on Shadow Light, please visit http://www.tragickrecords.com/shadowlight. So now even though I am still playing with Faith & Disease, and Shadow Light, I have decided to write new music in a genre that really is where my interests lie today, folk-rock. I've learned from all the bands I've been in and really plan on making this one succeed. Pulling with me some of my friends from the other bands (Eric Cooley from F&D, and Barry Semple formerly of SL, and on the recording Brian also formerly of SL as well.). The First Loss is the first of the albums that I plan on releasing through Tragick Records. We even plan on being in the studio this spring to start recording what will be our follow up album. ~ john clough a.k.a Johnny Forlorn |
